New IPM CRSP Bibliographic Database Online - September 2002

September 16, 2002

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- With the IPM CRSP Bibliographic Database now online, colleagues can search from over 12,000 citations for answers to their pest problems.

The database includes citations from journal articles, book excerpts, conference proceedings, and research reports and is available at Web site http://www.ento.psu.edu/home/extension/ipmcrspbib/ipmcrspbib.html

The Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Program is a United States Agency for International Development-supported research, education/training, and information exchange collaborative partnership among US and developing country institutions. It focuses on participatory and collaborative IPM research and education programs for horticultural export crops and other food production systems. One of the goals of the IPM Collaborative Research Program (CRSP) is to provide a literature survey and service to all collaborating countries. Many times, library resources are lacking in developing countries. Lack of proper literature hinders research efforts. The IPM Program at Penn State University has assumed the literature search and procurement task on behalf of the other IPM CRSP collaborators. The service consists of searching literature databases, obtaining requested literature, and sending it to the requesting collaborators.

For the last five years, IPM CRSP colleagues have been able to request literature through the online request form. Currently, IPM CRSP receives approximately 80 percent of requests through the online form, with the remaining 20 percent of requests being generated from visits by Penn State cooperators to the host countries.

Once a request is made, a search is done on the appropriate online databases at Penn State University. The search results, including title, source, keywords, and abstracts (if available), are presented to the researcher for review. They can then request hard copies of the most helpful references from the search. The results of each search are also stored on a local database at Penn State.

With the addition of the searchable IPM CRSP Bibliographic Database to the Web site, anyone with Web access can search the locally stored database for the information they need. Topics include crop production and protection, insect, weed and disease management, and sociological and economic impact studies. Many of these searches, although requested by individual scientists in individual CRSP sites, are applicable to other CRSP sites since many of the crop and pest problems are similar. The database will continue to be updated as new searches are conducted.

The IPM CRSP is managed by the Office of International Research and Development at Virginia Tech (http://www.oird.vt.edu/).
