Boxelder Bug The boxelder bug frequently becomes a nuisance pest around homes and buildings near plantings of the boxelder, Acer negundo. In heavily infested areas, they often are associated with ash (Fraxinus spp.) and maple (Acer spp.). This insect species is distributed throughout eastern United States west to Nevada.

Boxelder Bug Boxelder bugs may invade buildings, especially during the warm days of autumn, to seek shelter sites for overwintering. They are attracted to lights and will readily fly in open doors and windows.

Boxeleder Bug This bug is about 1/2 inch long and 1/3 as wide. It is black with three red lines on the thorax, a red line along each side, and an oblique red line on each wing. The wings lie flat on the back when at rest. The young nymphs are red and gray. The population of bugs may number into the thousands.
